Neil Druckmann, Studio Head of Naughty Dog, has announced he is stepping away from his creative involvement in HBO’s The Last of Us. According to Druckmann, he is transitioning his complete focus to Naughty Dog and its future projects, including writing and directing its next game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. The news comes as the second season of The Last of Us concludes and before any meaningful work on season 3 has begun. For those who have been following the series on HBO, the first season adapted The Last of Us Part I, while the second and third seasons of the show focus on The Last of Us Part II. It’s currently unclear if the show will go on to a fourth season, but there have been rumors.

The news shouldn’t come as a surprise. Druckmann, after all, is a game developer and is going back to focusing on creating video games. Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet debuted at The Game Awards 2024, but has seen no updates since. Druckmann isn’t the only person from the Naughty Dog team who is stepping away from the show. Halley Gross, who co-wrote The Last of Us Part II, also confirmed she’s taking a step back “to make space for what comes next.”

Fans of the game have had some mixed reactions to the second season of the show. I found the first season enjoyable—especially since I consider The Last of Us Part I one of the best games I’ve ever played—with some of the changes adding more depth to the characters. The second season, though, I found to be a bit messy with some inconsistencies in Ellie’s portrayal.
