Microsoft has announced immediate pricing updates to Xbox consoles and accessories. This marks the first time consoles have seen a price increase mid-generation, and it’s a noticeable one. In addition, Microsoft confirmed that some new first-party games will be priced at $79.99 this holiday season, following Nintendo’s lead in setting Mario Kart World at that price for the Switch 2. Perhaps more alarming is that the price increase starts today, May 1, giving consumers no warning at all. The price increase is also happening worldwide, but we’ll be focusing on the U.S. market.

While Microsoft didn’t specifically say why prices are increasing, we can all point to global market instability caused by the Trump Administration’s tariffs. As for game prices, that’s being attributed to the rising cost of development. We have a feeling this is just the beginning of price increases, as market researchers have warned tariffs would significantly impact the gaming market.
