Time sure is flying in 2025 as May seemingly creeped up out of nowhere. We’re still busy playing all the fantastic games that released in April, including Blue Prince and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, so here’s to hoping we can make room for May’s standout titles. There’s a lot to look forward to regardless of the type of gamer you are, but our highlights include DOOM: The Dark Ages, Monster Train 2, and Elden Ring Nightreign. If those don’t sound particularly interesting to you, we’re sure something else on this list will appeal to you as there’s a good variety of titles to play in May 2025.

Metal Eden

Metal Eden is described as an adrenaline-rush sci-fi FPS. It comes from developer Reikon Games, the team behind Ruiner, and features eight unique missions set in a dystopian future. Players take on the role of ASKA, a Hyper Unit android tasked with rescuing the consciousness of a lost human colony. The game debuted at Sony’s State of Play in February 2025, and players sampled a demo earlier this month. It promises an exciting blend of fast-paced shooting and parkour reminiscent of Ghostrunner and Titanfall 2.

Metal Eden releases on May 6, 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

The Midnight Walk

From MoonHood Studios—the creators behind Lost in Random—comes The Midnight Walk. It’s a first-person dark fantasy adventure game with a wickedly cool art style. Each character, environment, and object has been handcrafted from clay and scanned into the game, giving The Midnight Walk a tactile stop-motion aesthetic that enhances its atmosphere. Much of the game’s premise remains a mystery, but players take on the role of the Burnt One, who awakens from a grave and sets off on a journey accompanied by Potboy.

The Midnight Walk releases on May 8, 2025 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation VR2, and PC.

Revenge of the Savage Planet

Revenge of the Savage Planet, the sequel to Journey to the Savage Planet, is a third-person action-adventure where players assume the role of a former Alta Interglobal employee. They awaken from cryosleep to discover they’ve been fired and stranded on a remote alien planet. Their mission is to find a way back to Earth and get revenge on their former employer. Revenge of the Savage Planet comes from Raccoon Logic Studios and features co-op so players can embark on this satirical adventure with a friend.

Revenge of the Savage Planet releases on May 8, 2025 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

DOOM: The Dark Ages

One of my most anticipated games of the year, the next entry in the long-running DOOM franchise takes us back to the Dark Ages. In terms of story and timeline, it’s a prequel to DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal, which means we’ll explore the origins of the Doom Slayer. For gameplay, DOOM: The Dark Ages focuses on a heavier, grounded combat style—the developers are saying think iron tank. We’ve seen new weapons like the Shield Saw, reinforcing the idea there’s going to be a bigger focus on blocking, parrying, and melee attacks. There are also sequences where the Doom Slayer is piloting a dragon and a massive mech.

DOOM: The Dark Ages releases on May 15, 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Capcom Fighting Collection 2

Capcom is launching another fighting collection featuring several fan-favorite games. Each game in this compilation can be played online or in co-op with rollback netcode and global leaderboards. Capcom Fighting Collection 2 includes Capcom vs. SNK: Millennium Fight 2000 Pro, Capcom vs. SNK 2: Mark of the Millennium 2001, Capcom Fighting Evolution, Street Fighter Alpha 3 Upper, Power Stone, Power Stone 2, Project Justice, and Plasma Sword: Nightmare of Bilstein. Additional features include over 700 pieces of artwork from all eight titles and never-before-seen development documents used to make the original games.

Capcom Fighting Collection 2 releases on May 16, 2025 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.

Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time

After some delays, Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time is finally releasing in May. A sequel to the popular Fantasy Life on the Nintendo 3DS, this slow-life RPG will feature 14 unique jobs—or lives as they’re called—ranging from Paladin to Cook. This entry will also feature island restoration and customization, letting players place buildings, draw rivers, and more to create the island of their dreams. There’s also a time-travel mechanic where players will bounce between the present and 1,000 years into the past to uncover the island’s secrets.

Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time releases on May 21, 2025 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch and PC.

Monster Train 2

Had this been announced prior to the year’s start, it would have fallen on my list of the most anticipated games of 2025. But its announcement seemingly came from nowhere, along with a playable demo to whet our appetite. Monster Train 2 is a sequel that builds on the mechanics of the original Monster Train, a roguelike deckbuilder that really won me over in 2020. It features a three-tier train setup, where you place minions and play spells to help defend the Pyre. It has a lot of depth and strategy, and from what I’ve seen in Monster Train 2’s demo, this is going to be a great one.

Monster Train 2 releases on May 21, 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and PC.

Blades of Fire

One of the more interesting titles for May 2025 is Blades of Fire. It comes from MercurySteam, the studio behind Metroid Dread and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. Blades of Fire is a third-person action game with a combat system focused on precision and strategy. Players are able to target specific enemy body parts while exploring a deep weapon system, crafting and customizing weapons down to their length, weight, and material. With seven different weapon families and over 30 unique Forge Scrolls, Blades of Fire offers nearly endless weapon combinations.

Blades of Fire releases on May 22, 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and PC.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown

I’m trying not to get my hopes up too high for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown, since it does look fairly basic, but it’s the first-ever turn-based Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game. It also puts a spin on the story and world of TMNT, with Splinter and Shredder both dead and the Turtles approaching adulthood. Across 20 constantly mutating levels that grow, shrink, and add new threats with each turn, players will take on the Foot Clan with a new leader in this adventure.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tactical Takedown releases on May 22, 2025 for PC.

Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny

One of Capcom’s classics makes a return with HD graphics and improved controls in Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny. This remastered version of a 2002 title is being created to get a new generation interested in the series, which will see a new entry called Onimusha: Way of the Sword in 2026. Featuring intense swordplay and a dramatic revenge story, Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny stars Jubei Yagyu, who is making his way through feudal Japan with his allies. The remaster also features a new gallery mode with over 100 sketches, a new digital soundtrack, Hell mode difficulty, auto-save, and an easy weapon switch for improved playability.

Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny releases on May 23, 2025 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.

Elden Ring Nightreign

For many, Elden Ring Nightreign will be their game of the month, possibly their only game of the month. The standalone spin-off title is designed for three players, but it can also be played solo—just not in pairs. Set in Limveld, a procedurally generated version of Limgrave, players will face different layouts and encounters each run. The focus is on teamwork, with each session having day-and-night cycles for three in-game days, culminating in a final boss battle. Players get to choose from eight distinct Nightfarers, each with unique skills to cater to different playstyles. While characters will reset each session, players can unlock relics and upgrades that persist across runs for some meta progression.

Elden Ring Nightreign releases on May 29, 2025 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Lost Soul Aside

Update April 29, 2025: Lost Soul Aside has now been delayed to August 29, 2025.

Lost Soul Aside is a single-player action RPG from developer Ultizero Games and actually has an interesting story behind it. The game started its life as a solo project from Chinese developer Yang Bing, and after releasing a gameplay trailer in 2016 that garnered attention, Sony backed the project, allowing Bing to form Ultizero Games and build a team to bring Lost Soul Aside to market. It’s a flashy action game that seemingly draws inspiration from Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, and Final Fantasy XV, with shape-shifting weapons and a combo system. The game stars Kaser, who is on a quest to save his sister, Louisa. He’s accompanied by a dragon-like companion named Arena as they try to recover Louisa’s soul that has been taken by the Voidrax.

Lost Soul Aside releases on May 30, 2025 for PlayStation 5 and PC.

For veterans of the series, Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma continues to blend action combat with village restoration, farming, and crafting.
