While the internet is buzzing about Monster Hunter Wilds since reviews went live today, one of its competitors has announced it’s shutting down. Dauntless, which originally launched in beta on PC in 2018, confirmed in a very short message that it will be closing its doors on May 29, 2025. As of today, the game will no longer receive any additional content or updates, and no one will be able to access it starting May 29, 2025.
When the game officially launched on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC in September 2019, it was praised for being a decent Monster Hunter clone with a free-to-play model. It enjoyed a couple of years of success, but the player base has shrunk over recent years. Developer Phoenix Labs reportedly endured numerous layoffs last year and experienced even more in January 2025.
While the news is extremely unfortunate for all the teams involved in the game’s development, gamers can fill the gap with Monster Hunter Wilds, our most anticipated game of the year launching on February 28.
