One of the most surprising announcements from today’s State of Play was Tides of Annihilation, developed by Eclipse Glow Games. It’s an action-adventure game that takes place in a shattered, mystical London, where players take on the role of Gwendolyn. According to the game’s developer, Tides of Annihilation was inspired by a straightforward idea: to capture the thrill of fighting alongside trusted allies in a single-player gaming experience. With that in mind, Gwendolyn wields the power of a mysterious gray fog that can conjure two spectral knights at her side, with each one having a distinct combat role. Players will need to strategically decide which knights to summon based on their gameplay style or the challenges they are currently facing. Based on the trailer, it appears combat will be dynamic and fast-paced, reminding me of something you’d see from PlatinumGames.
Inspired by Arthurian legends, Tides of Annihilation features two distinct interpretations of a reimagined London. One is modern, with familiar landmarks that have been scarred by a supernatural invasion, while the medieval fantasy realm is Arthurian-influenced with ancient magic and mythical creatures. Players will have to traverse between these interconnected realms in search of the legendary Grail Shards as they work to unravel the mystery behind the supernatural invasion.
The game also looks to draw influence from Shadows of the Colossus, with giant, towering colossal knights roaming Greater London. The team confirmed that these knights are more than just a visual backdrop; they will present interactive challenges where players can climb, explore, and engage in epic battles. For those looking forward to experiencing it on the PlayStation 5 Pro, Eclipse Glow Games also confirmed that Tides of Annihilation will be PlayStation 5 Pro Enhanced, targeting 60fps gameplay with higher resolution, ray tracing, and improved image fidelity.
The trailer of the game looks stunning, and while it’s clear gameplay still has a ways to go in terms of optimization, combat is flashy and fun. The writing and dialogue also seem a bit off in the trailer, but the team deserves credit for casting Jennifer English, the voice of Shadowheart. No release date has been announced.
