As expected following the ESRB leak, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered was officially revealed during today’s State of Play, with an October 31, 2024 launch date. It’s hard to believe the original Horizon Zero Dawn launched over seven years ago, given how good it still looks today, but Guerrilla felt a remaster was necessary. The remaster was handled by the team at Nixxes and features over 10 hours of re-recorded dialogue, new motion capture, and significant graphical improvements. Essentially, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered delivers the same visual fidelity as its sequel, Horizon Forbidden West.
In addition to the improved graphics, the remaster features enhanced audio with a revamped sound mix. It supports PlayStation 5’s Tempest 3D AudioTech, including higher-order ambisonics and Atmos rendering. The team claims there are hundreds of improvements both in-game and in the cinematics with major improvements to sound design.
Other improvements include enhanced DualSense controller support, with custom haptic feedback and adaptive triggers integrated throughout the game. A new optional accessibility feature lets players toggle sound and haptic feedback when near interactable elements, such as pickups. These join other accessibility features that were first introduced in Horizon Forbidden West, including remappable controls and various assist toggles. Not surprisingly, Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered also comes with native support for the PlayStation 5 Pro.
The PC version of the game, which released in August 2020, will also get some upgrades, but those will be detailed in a future post from Nixxes. Unfortunately, it seems like we won’t be getting any new gameplay features like The Last of Us Part II Remastered did with its enjoyable No Return mode.
Preorders start on October 3. Existing owners of Horizon Zero Dawn on PlayStation 4 or PC, as well as Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, or PC, can upgrade to the digital version of Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered for $9.99 on both console and PC. This also includes those who added the game to their libraries during PlayStation’s Play At Home Initiative. Those who own the physical copy will have to insert the game disc to access the upgrade offer. If you now own a PlayStation 5 Digital Edition disc-free console, you won’t be able to upgrade.
Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered will be priced at $49.99 on the PlayStation Store, Steam, and Epic Games Store.
