After several tumultuous days with hundreds of thousands of negative reviews, Sony PlayStation has announced it is reversing its requirement to link Steam accounts to a PlayStation Network account for Helldivers 2. In a post on social media, PlayStation confirmed that the May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players starting May 30, will not proceed. The company continued by saying it’s “still learning what is best for PC players” and the feedback has been invaluable.
For many, this news may be surprising, but given the success of Helldivers 2 for PlayStation, especially on PC, it was a necessary move. The account linking requirement was particularly unreasonable for users who purchased the game but could not create a PSN account in their country. Valve and Steam recently took some matters into their own hands, by approving refunds to those players, even if they’ve spent hundreds of hours playing the game.
Hopefully, with these changes, the negative reviews will subside, as developer Arrowhead Game Studios had to bear the brunt of PlayStation’s decisions.
