Bill Roper is getting another opportunity to revisit the Hellgate: London franchise. HanbitSoft and Lunacy Games have signed a global licensing agreement to develop a new AAA game set in the Hellgate universe, currently codenamed Hellgate: Redemption. While it sounds like typical PR speak to say “Hellgate: London is an influential game that was ahead of its time in numerous ways,” this time, it’s actually true. Originally released in 2007, Hellgate: London had a lot of great concepts and ideas that truly did feel like they were ahead of their time. Not much about the new title has been confirmed, but it will be set in an as-of-yet undisclosed part of the alternate-history demon-apocalypse world.
What we do know is that it will use “Unreal Engine 5, cloud-based game servers, as many off-the-shelf solutions as possible, and great co-development partnerships.” The core gameplay and lore elements of Hellgate: London will serve as an inspiration, but the team at Lunacy Games is striving to build a new experience that takes advantage of industry advancements in the last 17 years.
“I’ve dreamed of returning to the franchise we created back in 2007 for many, many years. I’ve always felt I had unfinished business with the Hellgate IP, which is why our codename for the project is Hellgate: Redemption.”
Bill Roper, CEO and Co-Founder of Lunacy Games
