The nature of gacha mobile games is that they launch, make as much money as they can, and then they get put out to pasture. Square Enix has notoriously shut down many of its popular mobile games, and this year, Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia and NieR: Re[in]carnation are already on the chopping block. However, those games lasted at least a few years. Today, Bushiroad International announced that the global version of Love Live! School Idol Festival 2 Miracle Live! is launching in February 2024. But in the same announcement, the company also said the global version will close its doors on May 31, 2024. This may well be the funniest announcement for a gacha mobile game we’ve ever seen.

Now, the end of service for the Japanese version of the game had already been announced, so it’s actually a surprise the global version is still launching. It seems a bit opportunistic for the game to offer in-app purchases for only a few months, but this approach has become typical in mobile gacha gaming. For reference, the Japanese version, which launched in April 2023, is ending its service on March 31, not even lasting a full year.
