To celebrate its 45th anniversary this year, Space Invaders is now available as a completely new augmented reality (AR) game. Space Invaders: World Defense is now available on Apple iOS and Google Android devices, where players can venture into the real world to experience the game, much like they once did with Pokémon Go. The game comes from Square Enix and TAITO, in collaboration with Google. It uses the Streetscape Geometry API, which is a new feature of Google’s ARCore Geospatial API, along with the latest AR technology on Google Play and the App Store.
Space Invaders was officially recognized by Guinness World Records in 2020 as the longest running video game series, and is older than the majority of gamers today. In Space Invaders: World Defense, players can experience an immersive AR shooter that blends the classic game with a new dimension. Players fly through an augmented reality world while taking on the Invaders around every corner.
Like other AR games, players earn points by exploring their neighborhoods and defeating the Invaders they encounter. Look for special power-ups that can be unlocked, along with the ability to participate in area-specific rankings. There are some social aspects to the game as well, as players can share gameplay images and AR selfies.
