As a first-party Nintendo title, the Pikmin franchise has always been curiously missing from Nintendo’s handheld consoles. Nintendo game designer and producer Shigeru Miyamoto recently sat down for an interview to disclose why Pikmin won’t be on the 3DS and will probably never make it to the handheld console.

At the core of it all are difficulties adapting the controls to a portable system according to Miyamoto, stating that “unit management with only the touch pen” just didn’t feel like Pikmin. The action-based controls of Pikmin are an integral part of the game, and Miyamoto referred back to the original title for the Nintendo Gamecube as being a “carefree, easy action game.” Which means adapting the controls to the Nintendo 3DS would essentially remove everything that makes Pikmin fun.

“This game may seem difficult on first glance but once you try the controls, it’s easy,” Miyamoto said. “Even if you find using the pointer difficult, there is a control method using the GamePad similar to the previous GameCube titles that we’d like people to utilise.”

Pikmin 3 will be available for the Nintendo Wii U in North America on August 4, 2013.
