Earlier this morning, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Direct presentation debuted the first trailer for the upcoming sequel, set to hit theaters on April 3, 2026, in the U.S. While many were expecting to see Yoshi in the trailer, especially given the recent Pillsbury leak, it appears Nintendo and Illumination are saving the iconic character for a later trailer. Instead, today’s trailer revealed that Brie Larson will voice Rosalina, while Benny Safdie will play Bowser Jr. Previously, it was announced that several actors from The Super Mario Bros. Movie would reprise their roles, including Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek. Nintendo and Illumination said in a press release that additional characters and voice cast members for the movie will be announced at a later date.
Larson is a great fit for Rosalina, given that she is a Nintendo superfan and has expressed interest in playing Samus Aran numerous times. Assuming it’ll be a while before the Metroid franchise makes it to the big screen, it makes sense to get Larson involved now with a Nintendo property. As for Safdie, he’s best known as one half of the Safdie brothers. He’s primarily a director, writer, editor, and actor, known for movies such as Uncut Gems and Oppenheimer.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the follow-up to The Super Mario Bros. Movie released in 2023 that earned more than $1.3 billion worldwide, is being produced by Chris Meledandri of Illumination and Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo. It’s once again directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, while the screenplay comes from returning screenwriter Matthew Fogel. Brian Tyler is also returning to compose the soundtrack.
I’d recommend watching the entire Direct presentation rather than just the trailer, as it shows a bit more about the upcoming film and Jack Black makes an appearance, which is always a good thing.
