Sony has officially announced Project Morpheus, a virtual reality headset for the PlayStation 4. It was unveiled by Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios president, Shuhei Yoshida at GDC 2014. Though the headset is still in prototype form, it’s proof that the company is focusing on virtual reality and bringing the technology to the PlayStation 4. At the announcement, Yoshida showed off a short demonstration of early VR prototypes with a modified version of God of War from a first-person perspective. He then followed that up with the unveiling of Project Morpheus, the black and white prototype VR headset you see above.
Yoshida claims that the headset will have seamless integration with PlayStation Camera and PlayStation Move and currently has the prototype headset along with demonstrations in its booth at GDC. Morpheus will use Sony-developed 3D audio technology to recreate positional sound helping create a “highly realistic audio environment within an immersive 360-degree virtual world.” The company is focusing on six areas to help develop Project Morpheus into a mass market device: sight, sound, tracking, control, ease of use and content.
The company is working towards a 1080p resolution display with a 90 degree-plus field of view. Position and rotation head tracking has a three meter working volume and a full 360 degrees.
