Sony has published an extensive FAQ detailing its upcoming PlayStation 4, explaining and clarifying many of the console’s features. While many of the questions answered were things we already knew about the PlayStation 4, Sony also revealed some information on features originally not announced.

As we all know, the PlayStation 4 will be released on November 15, 2013 in North America for $399.99 and will come with a 500 GB hard drive, a DualShock 4 wireless controller ($59.99 sold separately), a micro-USB cable, a Mono-headset, a power cable and an HDMI cable. Since the PlayStation 4 is designed with an internal power supply, it won’t have one of those large, pesky external power bricks. The standard 500 GB hard hard drive is a 5400 RPM SATA II unit, but users will be able to install a new hard drive that is no thicker than 9.5 mm and is larger than 160 GB. Unfortunately, Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation 4 will not support external hard drives.

At launch, the PlayStation 4 will not support 4K output for games, though 4K output for still images and movie content is in consideration. Technically speaking, the console will support 3D gameplay at its launch, but no launch titles are currently 3D compatible. It’s also worth mentioning that the PlayStation 4 will not support standard audio CDs, which means you won’t be able to listen to music using the PlayStation 4.

Gamers getting their hands on a launch console will have to update the PlayStation 4’s system software to 1.50. The process will start as soon as the system is connected to the Internet and will download in the background. Gamers will be able to play games offline while the system downloads the 1.50 update.

As for the PlayStation Network (PSN) service, gamers will be able to have 2,000 online friends, a massive increase from the PlayStation 3’s 100 limit. Unfortunately, users will not be able to rename their Online ID on the PlayStation 4, but will have the option to display their real name in addition to their Online ID.

Sony also explained that the PlayStation 4’s graphic user interface (GUI) is called PlayStation Dynamic Menu and will not support Dynamic Themes that currently exist on the PlayStation 3.

Another notable feature that won’t be available at the PlayStation 4’s launch is the ability to suspend and resume progress across different games. Sony didn’t elaborate as to when that feature will be available.

Onto the DualShock 4 controller, Sony explained that it will take about two hours to fully charge the new controller whether it’s connected to the PlayStation 4 or on a charging station. The controller can be charged whether the system is active or in standby mode. The system will support up to four controllers at the same time and syncing each controller will be the same process as the PlayStation 3 – simply connect it to the system via one of the front USB ports.
