Today’s State of Play Japan broadcast ended with the announcement of a PlayStation 27-inch gaming monitor with a DualSense Charging Hook. Set to launch in the U.S. and Japan next year, the 27-inch monitor features an IPS display with a 2560 x 1440 resolution, making it a 1440p display rather than 4K. Granted, 4K is overkill on a 27-inch display, but it’s strange that PlayStation would bring a monitor to market for the PlayStation 5 that doesn’t support 4K. Adding to the strangeness, the monitor supports VRR and refresh rates up to 240Hz, but that only applies to PC and Mac since the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro support up to 120Hz. Then there’s the fact that it’s an IPS display instead of OLED, which makes you wonder what the point is when there are dozens of alternatives with similar or better specifications.
I suppose the selling point is the built-in Charging Hook for a DualSense or DualSense Edge wireless controller, but I’m guessing whatever premium Sony charges for this monitor won’t be worth it. If you’re still somehow interested, the 27-inch gaming monitor supports Auto HDR Tone Mapping and comes equipped with two HDMI 2.1 ports and one DisplayPort 1.4 port. There is also a pair of USB Type-A and one USB Type-C port that can be used with PlayStation Link Adapters or other devices. Not that I’d ever recommend it, but there is a built-in stereo speaker and a 3.5mm audio output. As with most modern monitors, the PlayStation 27″ Gaming Monitor will be compatible with select VESA mounting systems.
No pricing was announced, but it would have to be around $300 to be a compelling offering in the current market. For example, you can get your hands on a 27-inch 1440p ASUS ROG Strix OLED gaming monitor with a 240Hz refresh rate for $524.99. Meanwhile, Acer’s Nitro lineup has a 27-inch 1440p IPS 240Hz monitor for $224.99, which is comparable to this PlayStation offering.
