Those hoping to hook up an external hard drive to the Sony PlayStation 4 for additional storage are out of luck. President of Worldwide Studios, Sony Computer Entertainment Shuhei Yoshida has confirmed that the PlayStation 4 will not support external hard drives for game installs.
Previously, Sony confirmed that you can swap the internal hard drive on the PlayStation 4 for a much larger one. The PlayStation 4 will ship with a 500 GB hard drive. It’s rather disappointing news for the PlayStation 4, considering Sony’s push to move games towards digital downloads for the next-generation console. Of course, there’s always the possibility the company will add it as a feature later on since all the hardware is already there (USB 3.0) in order to make it work.
The Xbox One on the other hand, will have a non-replaceable internal hard drive but will support external hard drives for game installs on its system.
The Sony PlayStation 4 will be released on November 15, 2013.
