Before Final Fantasy Type-0 became Final Fantasy Type-0, it was known as Final Fantasy Agito XIII and was being developed for mobile phones. Originally part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis mythology, which also included Final Fantasy Versus XIII (that is now Final Fantasy XV), Final Fantasy Agito XIII became Final Fantasy Type-0 and became a Sony PlayStation Portable game.

While Square Enix claims the name change came with how the game took on a life of its own, others believe Final Fantasy Type-0 dropped the XIII moniker due to the poor reception of Final Fantasy XIII. Regardless of what really went on, it appears that the original Final Fantasy Agito that was being developed for mobile phones will be heading to Apple iOS and Android this winter, at least in Japan.

Final Fantasy XIII Agito was originally announced in 2006, and mobile platforms have come a long way since. Apple’s iOS 7 is just around the corner, while Google’s Android has evolved into a real mobile operating system powerhouse. It’s really no surprise that Square Enix has decided to develop what will hopefully be a true Final Fantasy game for mobile, rather than ports of previous games or casual games.

According to the magazine publication that first reported Final Fantasy Agito, the game will be somewhat related to Final Fantasy Type-0 as certain characters from the game will be making an appearance.

No word yet on whether or not this title will make it to North America. But given that Final Fantasy Type-0 never did, we shouldn’t hold our breath.
